What to think about when hiring a new international school Head

Question: What qualities are required in an international school leader? Answer: Many, including a strong educational background, an international mindset, and excellent business skills. TIC’s Managing Director, Andrew Wigford, was recently asked to write a feature on exactly this subject for International School Magazine in which he discussed how best to select the right leader for an international school.

Andrew explored the process and strategies a school board should consider when recruiting a new Head. “Every board will have high expectations for a new future leader,” wrote Andrew. “But the process they take for selection can be far from strategic.”

From identifying what type of leadership the school requires, and suggesting key criteria to prioritise in leadership selection, to planning a recruitment framework, Andrew addresses many of the challenges a school board might face, and how to overcome them. You can read the entire feature, published in the latest issue of IS Magazine here or the full feature is printed below.

If you like that feature, then you might also be interested to read Andrew’s article in the Autumn issue of International Teacher Magazine where he discussed the employment challenge that faces both the UK and the international schools market.
